FAQ

About the kit

Does the kit contain alcohol?

No. It's a non-alcoholic ingredient kit: grape juice concentrate, wine yeast and five small additive paks. The alcohol forms when you ferment it at home. For home winemakers of legal drinking age.

What's in the box?

Grape juice concentrate, a wine yeast pak and Paks A to E: bentonite, potassium metabisulphite, potassium sorbate, kieselsol and chitosan. Step-by-step instructions are included.

What else do I need?

Basic winemaking equipment: a primary fermenter, a carboy with stopper and airlock, a hydrometer, a siphon, a stirring spoon, cleaner/sanitizer, and bottles or wine bags. See the full list.

Do I need to add sugar?

No. Everything the recipe needs is in the kit. You only add drinking water.

How much wine does one kit make?

23 L (6 US gal), about 30 bottles of 750 mL.

Making your wine

How long does it take?

About 4 weeks. Ferment from day 1, stabilize on day 14, clear on day 15, rack around day 28, then bottle once the wine is crystal clear.

What temperature does it need?

Keep it at 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F) the whole time. Cooler temperatures slow fermentation down.

What is specific gravity (SG)?

A hydrometer reading that shows how much sugar is left. Medium-bodied kits start around 1.080 to 1.100. Before you stabilize on day 14, the reading must be below 0.996. If it isn't, check again in 48 hours.

My wine is still cloudy. What do I do?

Wait a few more days before racking. Only bottle crystal-clear wine, and never filter cloudy wine.
